QuickPull and BlackBerry OS versions 5.0.0.400-5.0.0.710

Many of you are familiar with QuickPull, our popular soft reset application that lets you reboot your BlackBerry phone. What many of you may not realize is that while QuickPull’s functionality is fairly simple-click a button to reset your device-it actually uses a very complex series of components working in unison in order to achieve this. It’s not so surprising then that QuickPull generates more support requests than all of our other products combined. It’s a complex app (underneath).

The BlackBerry operating system (OS) is also complex–and always changing. While OS 5.0 has been around for a little while now, there’s been a lot of kinks to work out, and you know what that means… leaked builds! Nearly 50% of our user base likes to dabble in leaked builds to try out the latest and greatest RIM has to offer. Unfortunately RIM does not always (ever?) take into consideration individual apps as they work hard to develop the next leak. Enter breakage.

That is the case with QuickPull (Free and Pro) on OS builds 5.0.0.400-5.0.0.710. An ugly bug in these OS versions prevent QuickPull from ever working. We’re not even sure how these OS versions got approved to become official releases, but we realize that even some of our more reserved upgraders may be affected by this problem. The only advice we can offer is to not upgrade above OS 5.0.0.400. The only known build above that to work with QuickPull is OS 5.0.0.711. Build 711+ appears to only be out/leaked for the Bold 9000 device at this time.

Now, inevitably many users will get the urge to reply to this post with messages like “My QP doesn’t work on OS 5.0.0.545. Please help me” or “bb not working halp plx” and we will feel a tingle of sympathy as we leave your comments in the unapproved state for eternity. So let’s avoid any possible heartache and use the support tab at the top if you need support. Our support team does NOT monitor these comments! We are hopeful that soon these series of builds will pass and the Dark Ages of BlackBerry sans QuickPull will end.

Wow, such attitude on the part of Steelthorne. “A tingle of sympathy”? Nice.

I upgraded my BB to version 5.0.0.591 earlier this week. Like probably every other BB user that did so, my QP no longer works worth a damn.

Guess, what? I can live without QP.

So far, version 5.0.0.591 is well worth the trade off. The phone is faster, looks and functions better.

I have no idea what Steelthorne means when they make comments like “We’re not even sure how these OS versions got approved to become official releases”. Are they suggesting that RIM has maverick developers who put releases out there on their own?

Regardless, when Steelthorne gives us a version of QP that will work I will install it. Until then I can live without it.

qp worked with my 9700 on .423 (or .422, cant remember what the ver # was) and worked on my 8900 with .411. so saying that it dont work on any OS above .400 is incorrect.

now with both phones on the most current versions it doesnt work

Makes sense. What can you do when the base prevents your 3rd party app from working? I toyed with a variety of brids spanning the entire 5.x spectrum and see what the developer is saying. The product works great if RIM “allows it”, simple as that. So I’ll just standby and keep cringing every time I remove that battery case…

    Hi Joe,

I think you are right. We ourselves have had success on versions up to .434, but we’ve heard some conflicting reports from our users so we wanted try and be as accurate as possible.

Same story for me. DLed the new 5.0 and QP went to hell in a handbasket

Im in the same boat as John. Did my upgrade without even knowing that this will not work> Before i will put quickpull to automatically reset my phone at three in the morning and it will reset, “perfect”. Now, put it at three, to wake up and see that the reset still is waiting for me to press a button.. Did the deletion of software, take battery out and in, re-install the quickpull software from the link given, and now after paying, get the message “Quickpull autostart has been denied the Cross Application Pernission”. And now, I can not even load it… What a surprise that you guys dont want to give a personalized support, you already got the money… shame on you!!!

Now that .607 is official for the Storm 2 I will take this that you no longer support your software for official releases also. Since quick pull is not working I have removed it. I had the paid for version.

Actually, we do support all of our products and customers. All you have to do is click “Support” button at the top of our website. It is just difficult to help people in the comments section of a blog, as they can get pretty messy fast.

QuickPull will work with the recently released Storm2 OS 5.0.0.607 (w00t!) as it appears RIM has included the bug fix in this release. There is one small issue that prevents QP from working totally automatically on this OS (a new dialog prompt), but we should have that fixed up shortly.

Any fixes for all the rest of paid customers?? Like any other Blackberry users? Tour 9630 and so on?

    @Jeff
When will QuickPull for the Storm2 .607 be fixed?!?!?!?

Every time I press the reset button, I get this message, “A restart is required for changes to take effect. To restart later, hold down the power key. Reason: QuickPull has installed or removed modules. Now I can not set QuickPull to do a Schedule Resent, because it stalls on this message. I just wanted to let you know that I have that problem when I installed the OS 5.0.0.607. Thank You.

It’s so disappointing to do a simple upgrade of your OS to find that the apps do not work. I wish someone would talk to someone else and figure this out. Are you planning to address this and will it be fixed or are you saying “maybe, maybe not”…it doesn’t seem all that clear.

Also, a nice general note when u learned about the issue would have been nice. We are informed about upgrades so why not problems…especially ones so LARGE. Perhaps many of us would have elected to wait on the system upgrade? Somebody somewhere doesn’t much care for their users…not sure whose issue this really is but what a mess.

  14. Jeff
    April 12th, 2010 at 08:46 | #14

@Brozmo .607 is fixable (unlike previous OS versions) and we are working on that now. It’s going to require a little coding magic, but I think we can get it done and tested in the near future. We haven’t set an exact release date yet, but I will be sure and create a post about it here once it is available. :)

Hi Jeff. I am running 5.0.0.586 on my Bold 9700 and I am getting a control permission request every time I run the QP app. After I hit View and accept and then hit reset now, it comes up with dialog “reset required” and choice of restart now or later. This extra prompt will not allow a scheduled reset. Let me know if you need more details.

Hey, any timeline for an updated version? What bugs exactly did Blackberry OS have and why aren’t they documented and fixed then?

Hmmmm….funny statements by Steelthorn regarding OS releases. Us verizon users waited a LONG time for OS5 on our 9630 but then verizon gave us .591 and QP stops working. I even DL’d and installed it again to see if I had done something wrong. Oh well, I can live without QP until this is resolved…..

Well this is a sad message to read. I have a Bold 9700 on Tmo with quickpull installed on ALL the beta and full release versions of the OS, and while it does not automatically reboot the phone anymore, I can still achieve the core function of the software. I can reboot the phone like a battery pull without the need to pull the battery.

This is what I noticed that changed and why it does not auto reboot. When the Restart Required message box pops up, the cursor no longer sits on the Restart Later button, but instead on the A at the top of the message. Your code is written based on being on restart later key and then moving the ‘cursor’ up to Restart Now. A simple fix is to change the code slightly to do a ‘space bar’ first which returns the ‘cursor’ to the Restart Later and then continue your code. The reason I think this would work is because when ever the Restart Required screen pops up and I immediately scroll down to the Restart Later Button, your code kicks in (it seems to have an attempt timeout period and also set number of attempts) and it moves the ‘cursor’ to Restart Now and initiates a restart.

After seeing that behavior, I decided to test for a key which skipped the scrolling and found that the space bar immediately skipped to Restart Later, and moments later your code kicked in and reboot happened. I am no programmer, but I can’t believe that it could be that difficult to implement this work around. But correct me if I am wrong.

How to re-download Quick Pull pro, was not working so I removed it

    April 17th, 2010 at 15:55 | #20

I don’t believe this…in APP World on Quick Pull it states ‘works on all devices’, that should be immediately changed. I downloaded Quick Pull, I have Blackberry Curve OS 5.00? and I can’t even get it to start, run or uninstall. Now it’s just sitting there. I want to uninstall it so what do I do? Your description should include WHAT IT WON’T WORK ON!!! If anyone else can help me uninstall or delete it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hey Jeff with all the problems with the quick pull issue, why don,t you just remove it from the market, so no one else has to pay for it and get F*****? until the issue is fixed.

Had free version – worked well so thought I would upgrade to paid version. WRONG. Every time I do a QuickPull, Ipush Reset Now and I get the message “Your device is going into REBOOT in 5 seconds. Press ESCAPE to cancel.” Neveer does a reboot, the message just stay on my screen until I hit Escape.

    Can you help me?

Jeff, is there any update on this? It seems that some folks are able to use QP on their .607 builds. I can’t use it, even manually.

Do not buy this product for blackberry. It will not work. It worked OK until I did a mandatory upgrade on my blackberry storm. Now quick[pull blames blackberry for the problem…nice If that is the case then do not sell your product to blackberry users. pretty simple but you as a company will not do this instead you steal peoples money. If you know your device does not work on blackberry then state that up front and do not take people’s money. Vey bad business practice

    Thanks in advance

Sorry Bob…manual pull does not work either.

Jeff….you really need to take Quickpull off the market until you get this fixed…or at least put a disclaimer on App World that it is currently not working with the latest software updates…

    Bad Karma….

Frank Has a point. Why is this still available if it wil not work. I almost bought the pay version thinking the free one was bogus! With that being said any updates? this app was recomended by my Wireless provider and was held high in regard. I will be calling them in the morning and letting them know that there are Known issues with this product!

I have seen various comments from folks who appear to have QP running now on various builds of 5.0 even in the .400-.700 range. I still cannot get it to work (read as a scheduled QP) and my hang up appears to be the fact that I am on a BES. My question is if anyone has this working and is on a BES what it your secret? I’m on a Verizon Tour running 5.0.0.662 (The Browser ‘click’ problem on .591 drove me nuts)
